There has been a breakthrough in negotiations over Angola’s participation in the Debt Service Suspension Initiative, with the Paris Club saying its member countries have approved Angola’s application for relief. China is now expected to make a similar move — but the prospects for debt relief to be extended into 2021 remain in the balance.
Ratings agency S&P has been among the most bearish on Angola’s economy, but even it sees a return to growth next year — albeit in response to a sharp contraction in economic activity this year. If renewed activity in the extractives sectors is going to drive growth, then joining the global EITI transparency initiative is a step towards improving the investment environment.
The government is facing opposition over the continuation of the sanitary cordon around the capital, but it is likely to maintain it as covid-19 remains much more prevalent in Luanda than anywhere else in the country. And leading opposition figure Abel Chivukuvuku is set to remain sidelined as he has been banned from establishing a new political party for the next four years.
